Gun for Hire

So, as you may have noticed, I'm a writer. My specialist subjects are feminism, body image, mental health and dating, but I can weave my copywriting magic around any topic, product or service (get in touch for samples). I’m also looking to partner with suitable brands for sponsored posts to my 40k social media followers (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter).
Need a presenter, host or speaker? I can do that too! Here’s a video of
me saying words.
Think we can work together? Want to know my day rates? Want to see some samples?
Gimme a shout.

Fear and Creative Copywriting

Fear?
Fear gets a bad rep.
Fear prevents atrophy. It keeps us moving, and offer us the opportunity to choose a direction.
Fear made me quit a promising career as an agent for a comedy company to make coffees and build an impressive writing portfolio.
Fear made me buy strangers’ stories for £1.
Fear got me a writing job for Australia’s most notorious rock star.
Fear made me write a blog that’s been read by 500,000 people worldwide.
Fear drives me to create content that’s gained me 40,000 followers in the last year.
Fear got me two agents.
Fear made me cancel my Netflix account.
Fear made me take up running.
Fear made me leave London and come back to Bristol.
Fear tells me what I love, and how to get it.
Fear precedes fearlessness.

I Will Pay One Pound For Your Story

michelle, thomas, tinder, book, salt, beef, jack, other, londoners, unbound,

I stand in a public, in Greenwich, or Brixton, or Camden, holding a sign. The sign reads I WILL PAY ONE POUND FOR YOUR STORY. I buy and record stories from the public. I transcribe the stories faithfully capturing the teller's accent, dialect and speech patterns, creating a unique and vivid portrait of the UK and its inhabitants.

I've collected stories about lost comrades, panthers hunting children in the Himalayas, love lost and found over thirty years, finding God through LSD, escape from a religious cult...all from the same people you encounter every single day.
I'm currently distilling the collection into an anthology of the one hundred most compelling stories I've collected from all over Britain – including The Armed Robber, The Dancer, and The Soldier.

SBW Advertising

After a £500mil refurbishment, the North Bristol NHS Trust needed some compelling copy to aid their drive to recruit more medical staff. They wanted to attract a wide range of candidates, with different levels of experience, for roles across multiple departments and specialties. All with just one email. I gathered and collated copy from several Heads of Department at NBT, and wrote an engaging piece that replicates the friendly tone of the wider campaign work.

Blog for Jelf Insurance Brokers
SBW Advertising

Financial consultancy Jelf asked me to write a blog post about fraudulent insurance claims in haulage and heavy goods. They wanted two things: lots of Google hits, and to stand out among rival commentaries. I took a huge amount of dry data and turned it into succinct, accessible copy. Clear headlines. Short, unfussy sentences. With the right SEO terms to attract search traffic – and an engaging approach to keep them reading. My research showed me most of the writing on this topic was sensationalist. So in line with the brand’s tone of voice, I set an informal but professional tone for this piece, making it stand out as a reliable, factual source.

West Bromwich Connections Public Engagement Project
Multistory (2013)

I was awarded a commission from West Bromwich Connections in 2013. The brief was to increase public footfall between the town centre and the local park. During my research I approached members of the public in the park, in pubs, in shops – and asked them to share their memories of the park. I eventually submitted two proposals to modify and augment the North and South Bridges over the Expressway – a prominent local landmark. The first proposal was to install a sculpture onto the bridges spelling out the phrase EVERYONE KNOWS ASK ANYONE, which I’d heard repeatedly during my research, and implied a shared history and experience which I wanted to commemorate.  The other was to paint text onto the bridges - the residents’ memories of the park, in their own words. My concepts were functional, buildable, and would add colour, character, and warmth to the town, creating a favourable impression on potential visitors.

Bedford Creative Arts

My writing skills and talent for creative solutions made me the ideal contributor for a collaborative project with We Are Now / Bedford Creative Arts. The brief was to create a new legend for Dunstable based on the wind and “all invisible things”. My role was to write a piece of creative text and devise a series of events. I tackled this ambitious brief by seeking inspiration from the local community. In the early stages of the project, I ran a “Cakes for Stories” stall to engage the community, raise the profile of the project and generate research material. I also met with local historians and local groups such as youth groups and over 75s Salvation Army Group to hear their stories about Dunstable. For the final day-long event, I devised a walking story tour, whereby a series of local stories were written on markers and placed along a designated path for the walker. I also wrote a short text which was printed on the backs of flyers promoting the event.

Social Media

For my personal brand, I’ve gained almost 40,000 social media followers in the last year. As a copywriter and creative solutions consultant, I can conceive a brand’s tone of voice. As a Social Media Consultant, I can ensure the brand’s established TOV is consistent in all content. As well as producing relevant, original and high-quality content, I can collaborate with the brand to set editorial goals, then develop a social media strategy to achieve them. These might be using SEO to generate inbound traffic, promote awareness and build an online presence and reputation. I can identify and expand development aspects in an organization that will improve content (employee training, recognition and reward plans) and increase audience engagement by planning and implementing a content calendar that works for that organization

The Arrival
Workshops for Tamasha Theatre

This year I was selected to devise and facilitate writing workshops and write a creative response to Tamasha's production The Arrival. I decided that the aim of my writing workshops for the participants was to collect and tell stories relating to specific themes in the piece – HOPE, LOSS and UPHEAVAL. I would then encourage participants to retell those stories in their preferred medium – with image, performance or soundscape. I ran workshops all over the UK and worked with participants from a range of backgrounds including the refugee community of Coventry. I engaged with different groups – the refugee community, a young children's group and others - by running story workshops. My creative response was informed by the stories that these communities shared.

I Feel Like a Secret
The Brewhouse, Taunton

In 2009 I made I Feel Like A Secret for The Brewhouse, Taunton as part of Aune Head Arts’ TriParks Project. The brief was to create a piece of visual art in response to the space: Priors Park Wood. I made a handmade book, a guide to enjoying the park, hidden in a squirrel feeder marked PLEASE FIND ME. I documented my visit in images and thoughts which became a list of challenges (run the spider gauntlet, find the four feathers, have you found the holly bush?). The product was aesthetically beautiful and intriguing, encouraging visitors to connect with their surroundings in a different way.
